A career as an ultrasound technician does not only cater to one's financial benefits but also brings in personal satisfaction for the individual.

An ultrasound technician career is one of the fastest growing careers in the medical field today, as proven by studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Physicians are majorly dependent on ultrasound technicians to conduct qualified sonography; as a result, the need for expertise in the field has increased.

Radiology technologist is another term used for an ultrasound technician. The sonographer does not get anything lesser than $55,000 a year while, for some the number could also range $75,000 - $90,000 per year. The figures mentioned above does generate a question that, how can one increase his/her earning capacity as an ultrasound technician?

 

Accreditation of educational institution and program curriculum. One should only choose those schools which are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), the accrediting body that endorses and sanctions schools and the program curriculums the schools offer, when applying for an ultrasound technician program. The accreditation is imperative irrespective of the course you opt for, be it a certificate course, an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree. The accreditation gives a standard to the associated schools and makes sure that each student undergoes all licensure exams that he/she undertakes after completing the course.

Graduation from a qualified institute is considered by hospitals and other health facilities, while taking hiring decisions. Hence, those studying in an accredited institute have an added advantage as opposed to those studying in an unaccredited institute. This does not mean that those studying in unaccredited institutes will remain unemployed, however; their salary package would not be greater than that of graduates from accredited schools.

Clearing the certification exams. Education only will not qualify students for practical field jobs. Clearing the qualifying exams will make way for actual practicing of profession. Hence, following accrediting bodies should be considered to take up the test - American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT), American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

Looking for specialization?

 

The major reason for limited number of ultrasound technician is lack of awareness. Also, a specialist draws much higher salary for the above reason and considering the complexities involved to undertake such a job.

 

 

Empowerment and progress can only come by developing a sound reputation and expertise in your respective field. Be stable in your job and the make your resume shine, as instability hinders an ultrasound technician's career. Instability can be seen by employers in two ways - One, they may not see you capable enough to be stable at your job and second - that your behavior is the reason as to why no employer is willing to hire you?

 

Also, employers feel that the individual lacks expertise as he holds no experience in his job profile.

Thus, if you want your initial salary to be competitive, make sure you get qualified education with certification and appropriate specialization.
